Man-made chemicals can be found in so many products that we use not only to clean our homes but also to clean ourselves. Phosphorus, nitrogen and ammonia are commonly found household chemicals that enter waterways through our plug holes and toilets, and then enter our rivers and oceans. Once in the natural environment, these chemicals can cause a build-up of large blooms of algae in a process called ‘eutrophication’. This algae uses up the oxygen that is naturally dissolved in water, depriving other organisms. It can also block out light for plant life and produces toxic chemicals that kill surrounding wildlife and sometimes even paddling dogs.

You can find ways of making your own cleaning products at home, or you can buy ready-made eco-friendly products from companies such as Method.
